Timeline
Greece Settlement on Dipity.
This history of Greece starts with the Greek War of Independence from 1821 to 1829. This was a war where the Greeks gained their independence from the Ottoman Empire. During this war the First Hellenic Republic (1829-1832) was formed. During the war many parts of Greece elected their own councils, and then these were replaced by united administration at the First National Assembly of Epidaurus during 1822, this is also when the first Greek Constitution was created. Later in 1923 Greece started getting a enormous refugee problem with about 1.5 million Greeks from Asia Minor. This increased the population of a already bankrupt Greece by about 1/3 in just a few short months. This lead to the creation of the second Hellenic Republic (1924-1935), in this time Greece proclaimed itself a republic. In this republic Pavlos Kountouriotis became the first President ever of Greece. Sadly this type of government didn’t seem to work well with Greece and lead to the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), the war being between the communists and the government. The communists did gain much power in the middle of the war but towards the end that dropped and they ended up calling for a cease fire ultimately surrendering. This eventually lead to the third Hellenic Republic (1974-current). The third Hellenic Republic is what Greece currently uses and the main crisis is the amount of debt the country is in.
