Biodiversity and Cultural Diversity
Greece is a country of many wonders. When it comes to biodiversity, Greece is one of the richest countries of the European Union (Petrou). What makes it so rich is the diverse features such as the high mountains to the deepest waters in the Mediterranean. In fact, the coastline is 16,000km long with 10,000 islands! (Petrou). The diversity continues with the plants and animals, Greece hosts some 6,600 taxa of vascular plants, 115 mammal species, 162 freshwater and 476 marine fish species, and some 30,000-50,000 invertebrates also present (Petrou).
Because Greece has been like this sense it was first discovered, it make sense that the cultural diversity is slim. Greece has even has a reputation of being ethnically homogenous to 98% to 95% of its 10.2 million people being ethnic Greeks (Mulicultural). The location of a country has great influence over it. Overall, the Greeks are particularly proud of their culture and speak of their country with great passion (Culture in Greece). Traditions, religion, music, language, food and wines are the major composites of the culture in Greece and make the definition of the Greeks national and ethnic belonging (Culture in Greece).
The two (biodiversity and cultural diversity) go together in Greece because the diverse biodiversity creates the non-diverse cultural diversity. However, this does not harm the country. People from all around the world come to Greece because of its diverse biodiversity and the non-diverse cultural diversity. They want to see all the different mountains, beaches, landscapes, and historical landmarks in Greece while being immersed into the full Greek culture. Greece is one of the richest countries in Europe in terms of cultural and religious monuments and historical significance with a total of 17 “World Heritage” sites, placing it in the top 10 of countries internationally along with a number of museums, smaller sites and monuments on places of historical or religious significance (Invest in Greece). Tourism is so great to Greece that the Ministry of Tourism has declared its intention to significantly upgrade the cultural treasures of Greece in order to enrich its tourist product offering (Invest in Greece).
Overall, compared to other countries Greece is not that culturally diverse, but very diverse with biodiversity. In a student’s view, I feel that if it is not hurting the country or others that being that way is ok and can be extra educational with Greek culture.
